Value(millions): NZ£0.0125 Architect: Public Works Department; Start Date: 1924; Completion Date: 1925; Description: Two-level brick Hutt Valley High School building on a 7.3 hectare site, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt, Wellington. 10 classrooms as well as offices and teachers rooms. The school was equipped with a very complete laboratory and specifically catered for the scientific side of education. The ventilation and lighting of the building was all that could be desired, as was also the heating which was from a central system, by means of steam radiators. As a large number of pupils used bicycles a large shelter was provided for these. Roll of 163 pupils and eight staff in the first year. The school commenced in temporary quarters in the Petone Technical School building at the beginning of the year with a roll of 150. Sir James Parr, then Minister of Education, laid the foundation stone for the building in 1924. Opened by the Hon R.A. Wright, Minister of Education on Saturday June 26, 1926 |
