The Southland Frozen Meat Company (SFM) was established in Invercargill in 1881 for the purpose to export frozen meat from New Zealand to Britain.
The first Chairman of Directors was Cuthbert Cowan
In May 1883 the iron clipper Opawa sailed from Bluff for London with 6,600 carcases on board.
Fletcher Challenge Limited purchased 19% shareholding in Southland Frozen Meat Company (SFM)
Fletcher Challenge Limited increased shareholding in Southland Frozen Meat Company (SFM) to 51.7%
From July 1 1985 the Meat Division of Fletcher Challenge's Rural and Trading Sector became a separate sector and was subsequently renamed Challenge Meats Ltd. Jon Lamb was appointed Chief Executive Officer.
Challenge Meats Ltd included Southland Frozen Meats Ltd (52.1% owned) and the Dunedin operation DMBA (Dunedin Master Butchers Association) Co-op Ltd (94.8% owned).[2] By 1986 employees of the Company numbered 2919.
In 1986 Southland Frozen Meat Company (SFM) became a wholly owned company of Fletcher Challenge Ltd.
In 1986 the Company opened its own meat selling organisation in London to service UK and European markets.
In 1987 Max Minnis was appointed Finance Director for Challenge Meats.
A wholly owned subsidiary company, "Challenge Italy", was formed in 1988. Based in Milan, it distributed produce In Italy and was headed by Joe Maranelli.
In 1988 the merger of Fletcher Challenge meat assets with those of Waitaki International Ltd making the two major shareholders Goodman Fielder Wattie and Fletcher Challenge Ltd each with 29 percent and Freesia Investments Ltd (the commercial arm of New Zealand Meat producers Board). Waitaki Internation Ltd purchased all the assets of Challenge Meats Ltd. (FC News August 1988).
