Project: Symonds Street Post Office Client:
Value(millions): Architect: J.T. Mair (Government Architect) Start Date: Completion Date: September 1931 Description: Construction of 720m2 three-level post office on a 403m2 site, corner of 224 Symonds Street & Mount Eden Road, Auckland. Three-storey street frontage with two levels above post office chamber and 209m2 high stud single-storey structure at the back. Two levels above banking chamber. Concrete encased steel frame, concrete walls & roof cover covered with asphalt. Concrete suspended floors with Matai timber overlay on battens. Opened by Hon J.B. Donald. “The Symonds Street post office, with its artificial embossed front of imitation pillars, was opened in 1931 and basically from a stamp-buying customer’s point of view hasn’t changed. The leadlight glass partitions in the writing desk are still there, the same ones where I put clean blotters daily: the wooden counter is still keeping the customers at a real arm’s length though it has been covered with plastic, and in the old days the tellers worked behind bronze grilles. There used to be a composition floor of black and white tiles in the public area which we telegram boys regularly swept, now it’s carpet tiles: the brass escutcheons around the posting boxes which telegram boys polished are now obscured by patriotic red, white and blue cheap wooden posting boxes” (Auckland Scrapbook November 1981 – September 1982). Sold at auction for NZD1.5 million. On 20 January 2005 approval given to BWT Investments Ltd to convert the post office. On Friday, 21 January 2005 Auckland City Council announced new life for old post office in Symonds Street, Auckland. It will be converted into a tavern, cafe and offices. The coat of arms above the entrance will be restored. The building was classed as character-defining for Grafton. The Auckland City Council said it was wonderful the icon could be enhanced, rather than torn down to make way for yet another apartment building. Architect for conversion was Jones Architects Ltd and contractor Aspec Construction |
