Description
The series consists of the collected photographs of James William Hill (Jimmy) who was employed by The Fletcher Construction Company for over 45 years -1920-1965 circa. Jimmy Hill was engaged by W J (Bill) Fletcher (Auckland Branch) in 1919 and started his apprenticeship on 1 March 1920. The apprenticeship was completed in 1925 and James Hill went on to become foreman of some of the company's biggest projects. The series includes photographs from many of the contracts on which Jimmy Hill worked, nearly all in Auckland including Hobsonville Air Base hangar, Milne & Choyce Department Store, the Grey's Avenue Flats, the "Auckland Star" office reinforcement for the presses, Dominion Motors in Newmarket, Greenlane Hospital main block and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Parnell. Also the Intercontinental Hotel and Bycrofts Plant, Otahuhu. In 1965 he was working on the Air New Zealand workshop at Mangere Airport. Series also includes views of damaged buildings resulting from the Napier earthquake in 1931 and The Fletcher Construction Company's construction of new buildings after the earthquake. The series holds copies of two documents; a letter from The Fletcher Construction Company advising J W Hill of his apprenticeship completion (1925) and letter of congratulation from Sir James Fletcher I for his long service to the company (1963). The prints held are duplicates from the collection loaned by the Hill family.
