Description
In 1914 Winstone was granted four sections by the Auckland Harbour Board (and negotiated a fifth) in lower Nelson St. The first cement store was built on two of the sections. The series includes photographs of the fire in 1956. In 1932 the Nelson St cement store was destroyed by fire, with only the foundations and the basement remaining. In the following year a new and longer lease was arranged as a preliminary to rebuilding. The new store consisted of three storeys and a basement, with four shops facing Market Place. Another fire occurred in 1956 so damaging the roof and upper floors that these portions of the building had to be replaced.
Circumstances developed which were to reduce the usefulness of the waterfront property and the building and lease was sold to Turners and Growers Ltd (1962-64).
The original waterfront yard in Customs St was principally a receiving and storage depot for coal, firewood and bricks. Most of the cargo came in by chartered vessels, or in the company own fleet of scows.
The series consists of both the early and later buildings, including the reconstruction after the fire in 1956. Also included are the Winstone scows and motor vessels unloading sand and cement at the wharf in front of the building.
