Jack Smith was educated at Rongotai College, Victoria University and Canterbury College. He joined Fletcher Construction in 1953 and, after 15 months in the USA, worked on several joint ventures and engineering projects, including Project Manager on the Lyttelton Tunnel and Marsden A Power Station. He was appointed a director of Fletcher Construction and General Manager (Construction) in 1967 and Managing Director in 1973.

In 1976 he became chairman of the building and engineering group and in 1977 an executive director of Fletcher Holdings. In 1980 he became a director. He was closely involved in the establishment of the Concrete and Aggregates Group.[1]

Following the merger in 1981, he was appointed chief executive of the recently changed Construction and Property Sector, and served on a number of joint venture and associated companies. In 1983 as the result of a restructuring Jack Smith assumed responsibilty for the construction side which also included the South Pacific. Micronesia and the Middle East. He was manageing director of FCC until 1985.

In 1988 he retired as chairman of the Fletcher Construction Company but remained a director of Fletcher Challenge Ltd until 1989

Jack Smith was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1989 New Year honours list.
