History
In September1971 Winstone Ltd acquired PTY Industries Ltd, Putararu based timber mill and forestry company
The P.T.Y Industries Group had its beginnings in 1938 in a deal for the purchase of cutting rights over some 3000 acres of mature bush in Tihoi, in the West Taupo district.
The original company, Tihoi Sawmilling Co Ltd had three shareholdersm a paid capital of 6000 pounds and borrowed money amounting to 24,000 pounds. In 1949 a further 10, 000 pounds was introduced
From 1939 to 1945, activities were confined to bushsawmilling at Tihoi, under rigid wartime controls imposed on timber output for defence purposes.
From 1948 to 1950 the company begab to prepare the way for a pase of growth and development. The pre-curring factory was built in 1950
In the 1950s the company produced radiata pine as a structural timber with its own drying kilns and timber treatment plants.
PTY launched a precutting service to the building trade and acquired an interest in a building firm which was later to become PTY Homes Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary
This firm undertook major house construction projects at Kawerau and Murupara, designing and building its own characteristic house types and played a leading role in developiment of exotics as a building timber
In 1960 began an active interest in forest ownership beginning with the purchase of freehold blocks and in the same year began moving into land development
PTY now had five trading divisions; the Forestry Division, Manufacturing Division, Merchant Division, the Homes Division and the Land Division
