As a result of the merger in 1981, the Fletcher Holdings Charitable Trust changed its name to the Fletcher Challenge Charitable Trust. The trust was constituted under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 and under the terms of the act funds were to be applied by the Trustees towards such "charitable purposes" as they may in their absolute discretion from time to time see fit. In 1990 the Fletcher Challenge Charitable Trust again changed its name, dropping the word 'charitable' from its name and was now called the Fletcher Challenge Trust (Deed of Change of Name: 1990). The focus of the Fletcher Challenge Trust was to continue to provide funding for education and youth development, and also to support community development initiatives and projects with historical, cultural or artistic merit.
