History
James (known as Jim or JR) Fletcher started with Fletcher Holdings in 1966 as an accountant in Fletcher Steel, Auckland.

He was Fletcher Holdings' representative in Wellington from 1968 to 1970. Then he became General Manager of the Plyco Products Division (wood panel products) and directed major growth in particle board activities.

In 1974 he became Managing Director of Fletcher Residential, responsible for the reorganisation and expansion of housing activities. He became an executive director of Fletcher Holdings Ltd in 1977, with special responsibility for the Group's export activities, and was also a director of Pacific Steel Ltd. Following the merger of Tasman Pulp and Paper Company Ltd, Challenge Corporation Ltd and Fletcher Holdings Ltd,

Jim Fletcher became Chief Executive of the Manufacturing and Merchandising sector of Fletcher Challenge Ltd, of which the five major companies were Fletcher Industries Ltd, Fletcher Concrete Ltd, Fletcher Timber Ltd, New Zealand Wire Industries Ltd and Corporate Trading. He resigned from Fletcher Challenge Ltd in April 1982.

Jim Fletcher rejoined Fletcher Challenge in 1993 in the role of Executive Chairman of the Fletcher Construction Group, also served as an executive member and President of the Auckland branch of the Export Institute and as national President.

Jim Fletcher was the eldest son of Sir James Fletcher II & grandson of Sir James Fletcher I, the founder of the Fletcher group of companies.
