History
In 1886 Mr JW Ellis started a small mill in white pine bush near Kihikihi on the borders of the King Country. The plant consisted of an 8 hp portable engine and two saw benches. Four men were employed in the bush and mill.
In 1890 Ellis transferred his operations to Otorohanga, where he was later joined by JHD Burnand, a government engineer. A Ltd liability company was formed in 1903 with JW Ellis as managing director. Milling rights were then secured over a large area near Mangapehi where a sawmill with a capacity of 25,000 feet per day was erected. An extensive tramway was constructed from the mill to the bush.
In 1906 the company moved south to Manunui where timber cutting rights were obtained over a large area of Maori forest. In 1901 a sawmill, surveyed and plotted out in 1895 by Mr Burnand, had been built here when Manunui was known as Waimarino. The first log was cut on January 10, 1907. Soon afterwards a wooden box factory was also in production.
Following establishment of the sawmill, JW Ellis, on his own account, decided to build a plywood factory and the Ellis Veneer Co. Ltd was formed in 1911.
In 1942 Ellis & Burnand had closed down their large sawmill and box factory.
In July 1961 a majority interest of 58.3% in Ellis & Burnand was acquired by Fletcher Holdings when it took over the Kauri Timber Co. Ltd interests in New Zealand and the company came under The Fletcher Trust and Investment Co. Ltd. The company was then involved in sawmilling, and timber and builders supplies in the Waikato and surrounding areas.
In 1976 Fletcher Holdings took its interests in Ellis & Burnand Ltd to 58.8% and in August Ellis & Burnand acquired the Hamilton rollformer, Reese-Run Roofing.
In 1980 Fletcher Timber Co. Ltd purchased the minority 40% share in Ellis & Burnand Ltd and the company became a wholly owned subsidiary.
