J J Craig Ltd 1866-1968

In 1866 J.J. Craig Ltd was established in Auckland by Joseph Craig. The company started as a carrying business hauling timber and building materials in Auckland.

On the death of his father, Joseph James Craig took expanded the business to include shipping, haulage, mining, brickmaking, lime and cement interests. At one stage the company ran about 70 ships - most of them sailing vessels. Both coastal trading and later Trans-Tasman routes.

When the transistion from horse to horseless carriage was beginning JJ Craig Ltd was operating stables of 500 horses.

At the time of his death the company operated 70 sailing ships and was the largest carrying concern in Auckland.

Joseph James Craig died in 1916 and his brother, Ernest Arthur Craig became Chairman of the company until 1919, when he retired.

In 1919 J Craig, JJ Graig's son became Chairman and Managing Director. He retired in 1931 and the company was administered by by various boards.

In 1942 JA Gentles was the nominee of a group of business men who purchased the majority of shares from the JJ Craig estate. The Winstone Ltd subsidiary company, NZ Wallbords Ltd became a major shareholder, subsequently becoming the sole owner through Winstone Ltd nominees.

In February 1968 JJ Craigs Ltd's trading activities were incorporated into Winstone Ltd.
