Description
This image is a file-print obtained from the Alexander Turnbull Library, item number 1/2-18897.

Originally appeared in the Otago Witness, April 12th 1905, page 40 (see link below), incorrectly identified as Winton, with the following caption:
"This sale was conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., in conjunction with the National Mortgage and Agency Co., and is considered to have been the largest and best-conducted sale ever held in Southland, and will be remembered for many years to come. The sheep, 27,000 odd, were sold in 32 minutes, and this must constitute a record for Southland, if not for New Zealand. The large number of buyers, who had gathered from all parts of the colony, were conveyed by means of 10 drags to the scene of operations at Burwood Station - a distance of 40 miles through very hilly country. Some 400 blankets had been sent on prior to the commencement of the sale, for the convenience of those who had to camp in the wool shed and tents. The catering for this large party was placed in the hands of Messrs J. Kingsland and Son. and fully sustained that firm's good reputation."

The image also appeared in "History of Northern Southland" by G.A. Hamilton, 1952, with the following caption:
"Nine coaches leaving Lumsden for R.O. Campbell's clearing sale at Mararoa. At this sale approximately 50,000 sheep were sold in 50 minutes. Messrs Heads, Hill, Agnew, of Invercargill, supplied 4 coaches, A. Ward, of Gore, supplied one coach, horses all grey, Brewer and Trembath, Gore, supplied one, and Sam Inder, Gore, supplied one, horses all chestnut, S. Gray, Wallacetown, supplied one and H. Taylor, Winton, supplied one."

This is most definitely not Winton, nor is it 1980.... It shows the Royal Mail Hotel at Lumsden with the Lumsden Presbyterian Church over to the right.
