Description
Some items 130 plus hi-res images TIFF format are missing from External drive folder. The files will not transfer from CD; The series consists of two photograph albums of the construction of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition which ran in Wellington from 8Nov1939-4May1940. The event was the centrepeice of the 1940 centennial commemorations. The exhibition attracted 2,641,043 people with a daily average attendance of 17,149. The exhibition covered 55 acres (22.2 hectares) of land just to the west of Wellington's airport. After the exhibition closed the buildings were used as extra accommodation by the Air Force. Following the war they were used to store wool. The buildings burned down in Sep1946. The construction of the exhibition was undertaken by Fletcher & Love Ltd which was formed especially for the project. The photographs were taken by Eileen Deste (b.1908 d.1986), official photographer to the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition. A duplicate negative exists of the mobile scaffolding used by Fletcher Construction on the job.
