DALGETY NEW ZEALAND LTD 1969-1983

In 1969 Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Ltd was registered in New Zealand as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Ltd in the UK and the New Zealand company changed its name to Dalgety New Zealand Ltd. It assumed responsibility for the operations previously handled by the NZ branch of Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Ltd.

As a consequence the Board of Advice of the NZ company became the members of the NZ Board of of Dalgety New Zealand Ltd. As of July 1, 1969 LC Nisbet was succeeded by LA Sisam as Chairma, in order that the Chairman be one based in Wellington. Other directors were LC Nisbet, JC Fletcher, LM Papps, LWN Fitch and RK Hart. LA Sisam remained General Manager until December 31, 1969, when he retired and was succeeded by DC MacDougal on January 1, 1970. Eric Millar then became Deputy General Manager and RF Hayes Assistant General Manager. [1]

In 1983 Dalgety New Zealand merged with Crown Consolidated and became known as Dalgety Crown Corporation Ltd, with the stock and station arm a subsidiary company known as Dalgety Crown Ltd. At the time of the merger, Dalgety New Zealand Ltd had 196 branches, sub-branches and other outlets, including travel and real estate offices where they were separate entities. Dalgety Travel was New Zealand's largest national retail travel network.

Dalgety New Zealand Ltd had 9 subsidiaries and 19 associate companies in 1982. The principal subsidiaries were Aotearoa Meats Ltd, a meat processing and packing company in Cambridge and CB Norwood Ltd, an assembler and national distributor of tractors, farm machinery and contracting equipment. Other wholly-owned subsidiaries were engaged in stockfeed supplement manufacture, sports goods retailing, air freighting, wood treatment and horticultural supplies.

Associate companies were engaged in wool handling, grain drying, seed processing, berryfruit propagation and sale, phosphate importation and sale and packaged travel tours.

The assets of the Group at June 30, 1981 were $163,998,000; total turnover was $854,600,000 and profit after tax was $13,315,000.

Dalgety New Zealand was also a member of the Dalgety International Group which had operations in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. (The parent company of the international group was Dalgety PLC, London.)
