History
Carl Ryan joined Fletcher Construction in 1951 as a Cost Accountant and worked at Kawerau during the building of the Tasman Pulp & Paper mill. In 1955 he became Secretary of Fletcher Steel and then Dunedin Branch manager.

In 1960 he was appointed Managing Director of Fletcher Steel, before becoming Managing Director of Fletcher Industries Ltd in 1971. He was also a director of Pacific Steel Ltd and Chairman of NZ Wire Industries Ltd.

He served as Managing Director of Tasman Pulp and Paper Company Ltd from 1978 until early 1983, while also heading the group's Forest Industries Sector. He then became Group Deputy Managing Director.

From March 1984 to September 1985 Carl Ryan was President and Chief Executive of Crown Forest Industries Ltd of Canada. He then returned to New Zealand to become assistant managing director [2] and an executive director of Fletcher Challenge Ltd.

In Novemebre 1987 Carl Ryan retired at the age of 60 after after 37 years' service with the company. He was appointed counsellor to the Group to advise on major strategic decisions a position he held until 1993

He has also been a director of Barclays NZ Ltd and chairman of the Airways Corporation of NZ Ltd.[1]
