Waitomo Portland Cement Company
1956-1970
Waitomo Portland Cement Company was established in 1956 to manufacture cement. Initially a one kiln plant the design and layout made provision for installation of and additional kiln and two additional silos.
The plant was located near the town of Te Kuiti, in the heart of the King Country, adjacent to the quarries owned by Beros Bros. Ltd. The plant operated a shaft kiln and by 1961 the annual output was 40,000 tons.
The Fletcher Construction Company designed and built the plant.
The Directors were Cleave McKellar Richwhite (Chairman), Leonard James Stevens, John Grieson, Mate Beros, David Lloyd Richwhite. N Gibson was Provisional Secretary.
David Lloyd Ltd was the selling and distributor agent
The company’s registered office was located in the Queens Arcade building, Auckland
In 1961 the company was taken over by The Golden bay Cement Company Ltd
In 1970 the works were closed
