1935 joined the Fletcher family firm as assistant to Andrew Fletcher, Manger of the company's Wellington operations.

Transferred to the housing division in 1937

After serving in various positions he followed his brother, (JC Fletcher) as secretary of Fletcher Holdings Ltd which was formed in 1940

Three years later he was appointed a director of the company.

John Fletcher moved to Christchurch to oversee the construction and operation of the Durock asbestos-cement product factory at Riccarton.

At the same time he became director in charge of South Island activities.

During the next 30 years he was active in all the company's affairs, especially in the South Island where a large part of his time was devoted to steel and timber operations and the development of a network of building supply outlets.

When Fletcher Industries was formed in 1954 to take over all the manufacturing operations of the Fletcher Group, he became its first Managing Director.

At different times he served as a director of all the Fletcher Group companies and in 1968 was appointed to the Board of Tasman Pulp & Paper Co Ltd.

He was closely involved with the financial administration of the Group and stood for his brother (the current Sir James Fletcher) whenever necessary as managing director of the company.

When he retired in 1975, his contribution was recognised by his continued appointment to the board of directors and subsquently to the board of Fletcher Challenge Ltd.
