History
The company was founded by W Turnbull who, in 1857, arrived in New Zealand with merchandise for business. With his brother George, the firm of W & G Turnbull was then established and became a large importer of all kinds of merchandise, which it traded in all parts of the colony. Its specialised services included a plant for grinding coffee, preparing spices, ground ginger, peppers etc, and the importing, blending and tasting of tea sold under the trade name "Empire". Subsequently, George Turnbull took over the branch which had been established in Dunedin in 1861.
When W. Turnbull died, the company was developed by his son AH Turnbull and Nicholas Reid.
W & G Turnbull was acquired by Wright Stephenson & Co Ltd in 1916.
