Bottled gas Ltd
Rockgas was the official trading name for LP Gas marketed by Bottled Gas Ltd, a subsidiary of WS & Co
Established circa 1934-1937 by Wright Stephenson & Co to distribute Rockgas a liquid petroleum gas used principally for heating, cooking and industrial purposes. (A Century’s Challenge, 1961, p167)
William Hunt, the managing director of Wright Stephenson & Co bought back the idea from an overseas visit – the objective of importing the fuel was to assist farmers to enjoy the benefits of modern appliances.(not verified)

WS & Co hold majority interest in Bottled Gas Ltd, leading national distributors of L.P. gas for industrial, domestic and recreational use.
The Agencies and Indent Department of which Mr E R Bavin is Manager, attends to the bulk buying and allocation of merchandise, hardware and other lines…it represents the subsidiary concern of Bottled Gas Ltd, and arranges importation and distribution of supplies of Bottled Gas from the USA.
1971 Bottled Gas Ltd becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Wright Stephenson & Co Ltd. The availability of gas from the fields of Kapuni has enabled the development of new customers and increased demand for accessory products.
Bottled Gas Ltd appointed New Zealand factory representative for the “Primus” range of gas burning appliances. New headquarters recently established in Wellington, including office, warehouse and gas bulk storage and service facilities.
1973 Bottled Gas Ltd changes name to Rockgas Ltd
1974 Rockgas Ltd – Distributors of liquefied petroleum gas and accessory equipment. Transport Village, Ngauranga
1975 new bulk storage installation was opened in Christchurch
1976 company has 70 bulk storage tank installations on client properties serviced by two road tankers
1981 subsidiary of Fletcher Challenge Ltd. Rockgas became a 16.5% shareholder in Liquigas, a company set up to provide a national LPG network. Rockgas established an LPG depot in Dunedin in 1982.
