Tasman Forestry Ltd: 1994 Handling 35m tall trees like matchsticks, this feller buncher is being operated on contract to Tasman Forestry!'s Central District operations in Tahorakuri Forest. The Cat 235B machine, the only one of its type in New Zealand, uses a Rotosaw 2800 felling head to cut effortlesly through trees up to 75 cm in trunk diameter and weighing up to five tonnes. Owner operator Ken Holmes carefully manoeuvres the 250 horsepower, 50 tonne machine alongside each tree, gripping the trunk at ground level. Within seconds the cutting head has sliced through the trunk, and the tree is lifted clear and carefully laid on the ground ready for haulout to landing areas.
