Tasman Forestry Ltd: 1994 Independent contractors audit the log making skills of contract crews around the central North Island. Bobbianne Hughs and Jenny Tierney visit logging skids at random to undertake an Assessment of Value by Individual Stem (AVIS) audit. A sample of stems is checked at each site and each part of the stem a quality grade depending on such characteristics as the number and size of the knots, the amount of sweep or bend in that part of the stem and the stem diameter. This information is loaded into a laptop computer, which calculates the optimum log mix that the stem can be cut to, compared with what the logging crew is actually doing
